We realized the healing power of nature very early on in our relationship. When we took our first big trip together to Hawaii’s Big Island in early 2009, Bret had just lost his beloved grandmother and Mary was coming out of a painful divorce. Spending a week together swimming with Sea Turtles, watching breaching Whales, hiking Volcanoes National Park, and sailing to see lava reach the boiling sea cemented our love, both of each other and of travel. And we’ve been living, working and traveling together constantly ever since.
“Saving the world, one story at a time” seems like an outlandishly ambitious goal for a travel blog. But when we began planning Green Global Travel in the jungle of Costa Rica’s Tortuguero National Park in 2010, we knew we wanted to focus on spreading the sustainable philosophies of ecotourism and conservation.
Just as spending time in nature had healed us, we firmly believed in the positive impact responsible travel could have on nature, wildlife, indigenous cultures and travelers themselves. We felt a responsibility to do our part to help make the world a better place for future generations. Though we weren’t experts by any means, we devoted our lives to helping our readers go green, one baby step at a time.
Since we launched GGT in November 2010, we’ve been blessed with countless extraordinary adventures. From swimming with Penguins and Sea Lions in the Galapagos Islands to Scuba diving in the Philippines, from climbing glaciers in Norway to a 3-week safari in Tanzania and Rwanda, each incredible experience has enhanced our understanding of the important role ecotourism can have in improving the economy and ecology of a place.
Green Global Travel’s success has led to features in BBC News, the Chicago Tribune, Forbes, Frommer’s, The Guardian, Huffington Post, Lonely Planet, NPR, Travel Channel, The Washington Post, awards, speaking gigs at travel conferences all around the world, partnerships with major travel brands and a dream-come-true opportunity to write for National Geographic. But our greatest source of pride is the fact that we helped lead blogger-driven initiatives that raised more than $20,000 for Elephant conservation in Thailand and Rhino conservation in southern Africa. We want to use GGT as a platform for truly making a difference in this amazing world we love to travel, and hopefully inspire you to do the same.
It may be our faces that are associated with GGT, but this website isn’t about us. It’s about the beauty of nature. The wonder of wildlife. The richness of the world’s traditional cultures. The meaningful way in which the history of a place affects the way travelers experience it today. Most importantly, it’s about the importance of preserving and protecting these things, because they’re vital pieces of this precious planet we all call home. That’s why we interview icons such as Jane Goodall, Jean-Michele Cousteau, and Erin Brockovich: They are the legends who inspired us, and who lead the charge towards a greener world.
“Saving the world” is a big mission– one we will spend the rest of our lives pursuing with passion. But we’re not alone. We’ve assembled an expert team of writers and photographers who are equally committed to promoting the positive impact Responsible Travel can have on local communities. Through our business arm, Green Travel Media, we work with companies like Discover Corps, International Expeditions, and Zegrahm Expeditions, who are all devoted to the principles of sustainable travel.
But the most essential part of this movement is you, the reader. Every time you share a story about a wildlife activist, about a destination that conserves nature or indigenous cultures, or tips for living and traveling more sustainably, you’re helping spread a message of positivity and hope in a world that needs more voices of light in the darkness. We appreciate every single person who takes the time to read and share our stories, and we hope you’ll continue to follow us as we strive to inspire others to do their small part to help make the world a better place.
